DANGER Chinese Balms like Tiger Balm typically contain the petrochemical petroleum jelly (petrolatum). It is the major ingredient by volume. Manufacturers use petrolatum because it is unbelievably cheap. HOWEVER . . .

Petroleum jelly, a mineral oil, can cause allergic skin reactions and there have been studies linking impurities in petroleum products with cancer. Petrolatum (petroleum jelly) is listed as a probable human carcinogen in the European Union's Dangerous Substances Directive (UNECE 2004), and its’ use in cosmetics was banned in September 2004. Petroleum jelly forms an occlusive barrier, repelling water (AND HERBS!) and trapping heat inside. That explains why petroleum jelly is not in our external formulas; we want the herbs to penetrate into the body.

Paraffin (wax) is also found in Chinese Balms like Tiger Balm. It is a Petroleum by-product that coats the skin like plastic, clogging the pores. It interferes with skin's ability to eliminate toxins, promoting acne and other disorders.

Ammonium hydroxide is also found in Chinese Balms like Tiger Balm (red variety as the coloring agent)

Dan Shen/Salvia Miltiorrhiza and Hawthorn Berry/Cratagus Fruit keep the arteries to the heart clear. Hawthorn contains flavonoids that "dilate the blood vessels to lower blood pressure and dissolve cholesterol deposits in the lining of blood vessels." Poligoni Multiflori is a blood tonic and may increase the body's HDL to help remove cholesterol.
